Modest Mouse - Indie’s angry (and often earnest) young men from Issaquah, WA. Consisting of songwriter/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green, Modest Mouse first truly hit the scene after years of solo bedroom recordings in a shed and various house shows with 1996’s This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About.
It was once said that no dorm building in the Pacific Northwest was complete without Mouse’s harrowing debut, and that really rings true. From the get-go, Modest Mouse displayed illustrious influenced from folk to punk, post-punk, and emo, even incorporating dance music. This all fit into a niche sound based around Greene’s rolling tom drums, Judy’s soaring basslines, and the sloppy-yet-trick-riddled, jagged guitar sounds of Brock. Isaac Brock’s vocals also served to be a unique draw, due to his witty and surreal lyricism, a subtle mountain drawl, and his now notorious lisp (which was amateurishly edited out on Long Drive, and seeps through in many of the tracks). The record was an underground success, largely due to opening slots for artists such as Built to Spill and constant grueling touring.
Their road struggles would also find root in the band's sophomore record, The Lonesome Crowded West, which proved to be the band’s true breakthrough, and an absolutely definitive album of indie rock in the 90s. A concept record covering topics such as alienation with religion and the urban sprawl, the record was both cluttered and completely cohesive. The touring for LCW was just as harsh as those preceding Long Drive, and the indie community grew nervous as to what the future had in store for Modest Mouse. Their contract with Up Records expired, and they had been signed to major label Epic. On top of that, Isaac Brock had been using hard drugs, which was then unbeknownst to much of their fans. This set the stage for what would become the record many consider their crowning achievement: The Moon and Antarctica.
Recording started for the band’s third record began in July 1999 in a half-built Clavas Studios in Chicago. Behind the board was Califone’s Brian Deck, a friend of Brock’s whom he connected with after the respective bands were billed together. Brock was also heavily involved in production, watching over Deck’s shoulder and mastering the complex studio effects that went into making the cold, spacey, strange sounds that make up The Moon and Antarctica. In the middle of recording, Brock was attacked by a group of delinquents and had to have his jaw wired shut. This greatly delayed recording, and also added a denser air of misanthropy than the previous two records.
Review by /u/StrensmsToothInACan
The Moon and Antarctica is, at its core, a dirty and divine illustration of the vastness of man, the Earth, the universe, and life. Due to Isaac’s drug habit, the Moon and Antarctica is effectively another notebook of Chris McCandless. Faced with the strange beauty of nature, Isaac poisoned himself with various substances. Strung out, he skimmed the surface of Antarctica, and took in the bitter cold. Then, he disintegrated into thin air and felt the universe at large, and took in the dead cold. His testament was much larger than “Happiness only real when shared”, but was no less chilling. Through self-deprecation, Isaac seemed to take in a perspective: The only thing that is vaster than space is death, and life is simply the defiance of that, and it’s utterly beautiful.
This viewpoint, however, didn’t shake his signature misanthropic mindset. This record ends with the lyric “If there’s one thing I learned about human beings it’s this/ they aint made of nothin’ but water and shit.” This fragile, rare life is most definitely wasted at every turn, and it’s not easy to ignore that. Despite having the capacity to comprehend these existential epiphanies, human beings seem to be the bare minimum. We’ve evolved just enough to have the traits to contemplate and violate evolutionary expectations, no more and no less. We’re just as perverse as we are beautiful; just watery shit creatures pouring dense blue light with an air of self-importance. This is effectively the Moon and Antarctica. The lyrics may loosely contain these thoughts, but nothing conveys them quite like the sonics themselves. The Moon and Antarctica holds some of the most vibrant and sometimes vicious guitar sounds of any record ever made. It trembles, glows, and petrifies the listener in quickly shifting sensations - Frozen, we thaw with the heat of stars, just to be frozen again when drifting back into open space. It’s a glorious battering from start to finish.Through the existential wonder and dread of The Moon and Antarctica, one thought seems to ring out - Even though we rebel from death by surviving, there’s eventually no escape. It’s an often-spoken truth, but this record contains the right sounds to freeze it in your heart. We’re isolated, and we will die. Our blood needed to freeze before we could be stripped of our warmth and face this, and the few blankets we carry are in just as much abundance on the Moon and Antarctica. Thoughts like those warm stars being projectors, projecting our lives down to this planet Earth.
My Favorite Lyrics
Everything that keeps us together is falling apart
I got this thing that I consider my only art of fucking people over
My boss just quit the job
Said he's going out to find blind spots and he'll do it,
The 3rd Planet is sure that they're being watched
By and eye that can't be stopped and when you get to the promised land
You're gonna shake that eye's hand
YOUR HEART FELT GOOD
IT WAS DRIPPIN' PITCH AND MADE OF WOOD
AND YOUR HANDS AND KNEES
FELT COLD AND WET ON THE GRASS TO ME
WELL OUTSIDE NAKED SHIVERING LOOKING BLUE
FROM THE COLD SUNLIGHT THAT'S REFLECTING OFF THE MOON
AND BABY CUM ANGELS FLY AROUND YOU
REMINDIN' YOU WE USED TO BE THREE AND NOT JUST TWO AND THAT'S HOW
THE WORLD BEGAN
AND THAT'S HOW
THE WORLD WILL END
Well, a 3rd had just been made and we were swimming in the water
Didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter
And it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies
And another had been found another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic, and how?
Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
And the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
And the universe is shaped exactly like the earth..
3rd Planet
Oh gotta see, gotta know right now,
What's that riding on your everything?
It isn't anything at all
Oh gotta see, gotta know right now,
Whats that riding on your shelf
in bathrooms and bad motels
no one really cares for it at all
nothing gravity planned
EARLY EARLY IN THE MORNING
IT PULLS ALL UNDER MY SORE FEET
I WANT TO GO BACK TO SLEEP
And the motions
and the things that you say
it all will fall, fall right into place
as fruit drops
flesh it sags
Everything will fall right into place
When we die
some sink and some lay
But at least I don't see you float away
And all the spilt milk, sex and weight
It all will fall, fall right into place
Gravity Rides Everything
I wanna live in a city with no friends or family
I'm gonna look out the window of my color TV
I wanna remember to remember to forget you forgot me
I'm gonna look out the window of my color TV

A Different City
So long to this cold cold part of the world
So long to this bone bleached part of the world
So long to this saw-soaked part of the world
I stepped down as president of Antarctica
Can't blame me, don't blame me,
Don't
How do you, how do you do?
My name is you
Flies they all gather round me, and you too
You cant see anything well
you ask me what size it is, not what I sell AHAHAHAHAH
Flies they all gather round me, and you too
WELL I DONT WANT YOU TO BE ALONE DOWN THERE TO BE ALONE DOWN THERE TO BE ALONE
Alone Down There
The stars are projectors, yeah
Projecting our lives down to this planet Earth
And the stars are projectors, yeah
Projecting our minds down to this planet Earth
Everyone wants a double feature
They want to be their own damn teacher and how
All the stars are projectors, yeah
Projecting our lives down to this planet earth
It's all about the modern climates
you gotta be cold and be hot for sure
and its all about the modern climates
You gotta be blessed and be cursed for sure
..
YOU'VE GOT THE HARDER PART
YOUVE GOT THE KINDER HEART AND THATS TRUE
I'VE GOT EASY THE PART
I'VE GOT THE HARDER HEART AND THATS TRUE
WELL RIGHT WING LEFT WING CHICKEN WING
IT'S ALL BUILT ON FINDIN' THE EASIER WAY THROUGH
GOD IS A WOMAN AND THE WOMAN IS
AN ANIMAL THAT ANIMAL IS MAN AND THAT'S YOU
Was there a need for creation?
Maxwell's hidden math equation and that's

The Stars are Projectors
A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard one day
My father got his gun, shot it up they ran away okay!
A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard one day and as my own dog ran away with them
I didn't say much of anything at all, didn't say much of anything at all
well a wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard as my little sister played
The dogs took her away and I guess she was eaten up okay yeah she was eaten up okay
My mother's crying blood and dust now my mother's crying blood and dust now mother's crying blood and dust now
My daddy quit his job today
Well I guess he was fired but that's okay
now I'm sitting outside down by the lake
Waiting for the pack to take me away
Right after I die, the dogs start floating up to the glowing sky
Now they will receive their reward
Now they will receive their reward
yeah they will receive their rewards

I came as ice, I came as a whore
I came as advice that came too short
I came as gold, I came as crap
I came clean and I came as a Rat
It takes a long time but God dies too,
But not before he sticks to you.
Well I don't know what I've been told
You'll never die if you never grow old
AYAAAYAYAAA
I Came As A Rat
Everyone's afraid of their own life
if you could be anything you wanted I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?
no one really knows the ones they love
if you knew everything they though bet you'd wish they'd just shut up
..
and it's our lives
it's hard to remember it's hard to remember we're alive for the first itme
it's hard to remember it's hard to remember we're alive for the last time
it's hard to remember it's hard to remember to live before you die
it's hard to remember it's hard to remember that our lives are such a short time
it's hard to remember it's hard to remember when it takes such a long time

Lives
In this life like weeds, you're just a rock to me..
(I could have told you all that I love you)
And in the places you go, you'll see the place where you're from
(I could have told you all that I love you)
And in the faces you meet, you'll see the place where you'll die
(I could have told you all that I love you)
And on the day that you die, you'll see the people you'd met
(I could have told you all that I love you)
And in the faces you see, you'll see just who you've been
(I wish I could have told you all:)
..
In this life like weeds
I know where you're from
But where do you belong
In this life like weeds
Eyes need us to see
Hearts need us to beat
In this life like weeds
In this life like weeds
you're the dirt I breath
..
All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up until there's nothing left to breath
And you think you feel most everything
but we know that our hearts are just made out of strings to be pulled
So you think you figured out most everything
But we know that our minds are just made of strings to be pulled
All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up until there's nothing left to breath, up until there's nothing left to speak, up until the devil parts some space.

What are your favourite songs/lyrics from the album?
Both M&A and LCW are undisputed masterpieces; do you have a favorite? Or are you like me in that the last one you heard is your favorite?
*How do you interpret the Moon and Antarctica? It’s a deeply personal record with many open ended questions. What’s your take?
*Do you think Isaac Brock’s misanthropy comes from witnessing the wasted potential, or just finding us to be obscene? Something else?
*Is Isaac a “character”, or just an asshole?
