The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in holy city if Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) from January 21 to January 23, 2019. Its theme will be “Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India”. The mega event will be organised by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in association with Uttar Pradesh government.

The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held from January 21 to 23, 2019, announced Minister of State for External Affairs General VK Singh. The convention will be held at Varanasi and afterwards participants will visit Prayagraj for Kumbh Mela on January 24 and witness the Republic Day Parade at New Delhi on January 26.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the mega event. The three-day event will attract many eminent personalities of Indian origin from world over. Speaking to media in New Delhi, General VK Singh said the first day will be dedicated to the youth.
On January 21, the meet will open with Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in partnership with Ministry of Youth affairs and Sports. On this day, the Valedictory Address will be delivered and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards will be conferred by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth will be the Chief Guest of the convention while Himanshu Gulati, Member of Parliament of Norway, will be the Special Guest, and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Member of Parliament of New Zealand, will be the Guest of Honour at the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 21, 2019.
Asked about how the event will help India's foreign outreach policy, general VK Singh said, 'See, foreign policy outreach have many tenets; some are direct, some are indirect. In New York, a big India parade happens in August. Our diaspora sends a lot of money to us. It has an indirect impact. The kind of outreach we build from events like Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas only increases with time.'
Uttar Pradesh government will also organise the state's Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019 on January 21, 2019.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest pravasi who led India's freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever, returned to India from South Africa.
The conventions are being held every year since 2003.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or Non Resident Indian Day is observed on 9 January every year by the Union Government till 2015 and now it is celebrated once in every two years to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. Or we can say that this day is celebrated to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government of India and reconnect them with their roots.
Why 9 January is decided to celebrate NRI Day?
On 9 January,1915, Mahatma Gandhi came to India from South Africa and became the greatest Pravasi who led India's Freedom Struggle and made India free from British or colonial rule. He not only changed the lives of Indian's but also created an example that if a person dreams and desires are clear, he or she can achieve anything. As a Non Resident Indian or Pravasi he is presented as a symbol of a change and development that could bring into India.
According to the Indian Government NRI has a global exposure in terms of business and development strategies around the world. If some opportunity is provided to them they will contribute in the developmental process by infusing their ideas and experiences on their mother land i.e. India.
Do you know that the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or Non Resident Indian Day was celebrated on 9 January, 2003 and was observed annually till 2015. In 2016, Ministry of External Affairs decided to make the event biennial and since then it is celebrated every second year. This time Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2019 is being held on 21-23 January in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

This time the Chief Guest of the Convention will be Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius. Let us tell you that Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians. This Award is conferred by the President of India as a part of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Conventions which was organised since 2003.

Some interesting facts about PBD or NRI Day
- Most of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention held at New Delhi that is in the year 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014.
- Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is organised outside India. To give chance to link up those Indian Diaspora's who cannot travel to India for the main event. It has been organised in 8 different cities.

- The 2015 year marked 100 years or a century of the return of Mahatma Gandhi. So, 2015 celebration of PBD was a symbolic one.
